Escape | Leak-Proof. Critter-Proof. Now Tariff-Proof!

We’ve always produced some of the best travel trailers on the market! We understand your concerns about tariffs and want you to know we’re here to support you.

Canadian Customers:

1. Confirm your trailer today, and place your non-refundable 10% deposit to secure your build slot at a fixed exchange rate – which is currently 1.43 CAD:USD

2. Escape will take the risk on all tariffs from that point forward impacting the cost of your trailer

An Escape trailer’s supply chain inputs are actually quite similar to an automobile which thanks to the press coverage of late in Canada more people are quite familiar with.

This means that our supply chain is global in nature – both directly (meaning we source some parts from outside North America ourselves) or indirectly (suppliers / distributors we buy from either get smaller parts from places outside of North America and either assemble them into something they sell to us or resell what they bought to us).

The result of the global nature of sourcing (as noted in our President’s Letter #3 below) is that reciprocal tariffs & retaliatory tariffs are actually incredibly painful for us.

For a simple example, consider the following scenario that is very common because we buy a lot of US made parts.

Escape buys a part from a US based supplier for $100 who buys 50% of their ‘small’ parts and other inputs from China (none of which are metal as that would add another level of complexity into the calculation):

Old – Supplier sells us a ‘Made in the USA’ part with $50 (50%) Chinese content costed into it and no tariff impacts for $100.

New – Supplier sells us a ‘Made in the USA’ part with $50 of Chinese content that is now 145% more expensive to them (+10%+10%+34%+50%+41%); and we pay a 25% tariff on that part’s market value as it comes into Canada before installing it into your trailer.

Absolute best case – (which assumes that supplier *only* passes on their cost increase and doesn’t take any margin on that higher cost means that part now costs us the original $100 PLUS $72.50 (to account for the tariffs on import into the USA the supplier paid for their Chinese parts PLUS $43.13 for us to pay the retaliatory tariff Canada has on US imports.

The result? That part that used to cost us $100 now costs us at best $215.63 and that’s before accounting for currency impacts and a variety of other things.

In the long term, Escape and its suppliers or distributors may be able to source from a local manufacturer or a different global location with lower tariffs (and therefore lower costs) but these types of changes take many months if not years to execute upon so can’t be counted on in the short term to push costs back downwards.

Yes, they’re causing issues in a few areas, but nothing that we can’t manage by being flexible, at least so far.

In the longer term, we source many component parts from US-based companies that in turn procure the parts they need to build their products from China.

We do expect to see cost pressure on those items in the coming weeks and months if tariffs stay in place which will in time require us to increase our prices in turn.

However, once you place your 10% non-refundable deposit we are on the hook for those increased costs as they come through, not you.

In the short term, no – this isn’t impacting Escape.

However, in the longer term, like the tariffs on Chinese products or parts into the USA the increased costs of aluminum and steel for our US suppliers we expect will be passed on to us.

Additionally, the frames of our trailers, while manufactured in Canada use significant amounts of aluminum or steel and that raw material when sourced in North America tends to move back and forth across the border between Canada and the USA many times before it gets to our suppliers for final assembly. We are watching this area closely as between US metal import tariffs and Canadian retaliatory tariffs could get a lot more expensive very quickly.

While we are still assessing the impacts of these retaliatory tariffs, we do know that certain items we buy we are already paying tariffs on as we import them into Canada and as such they are certain to increase our costs on a variety of inputs. If these tariffs stay in place, or expand further it will require us to increase prices at some point.

Canadian Customers with their full, non-refundable deposit paid are already in a tariff – proof position, specifically as it relates to currency changes and retaliatory tariffs (as they come into effect).

Escape takes the risk on the input costs of trailers going up once that deposit is in and that would include more expensive US Dollar based inputs whether sourced from the USA or elsewhere around the globe, including any tariffs on those imports if they were to come into effect.

We love our customers from anywhere in North America, and although we are a proud Canadian Manufacturer; the costs of maintaining our website and price sheets in both currencies is very high because we have so many customizations.

For those that have visited Escape in person, you’ll know that we’re not living in a glass and marble palace like your average RV dealership with endless numbers of staff here just maintaining price sheets.

Instead, we believe in keeping our administrative costs reasonable and ensuring that savings are passed on to you, our customers.

However, unrelated to the threatened tariffs that have made American symbols like the US Dollar very politically charged, for the last 6 months we’ve been working on a new version of our online trailer builder tool which we hope to release soon which will have a currency toggle in it capable of displaying pricing in either currency.

Until that’s completed though, as of February 10, 2025 we have fixed the exchange rate at 1.43 CAD : 1 USD and have updated the webpage to display prices in CAD using that rate in the interim.

United States Customers:

1. Confirm your trailer today, and place your (previously) non-refundable 10% deposit to secure your build slot

2. In the event import tariffs never come to pass, everything proceeds as per normal and the deposit remains non-refundable

3. In the event there is an import tariff put in place:

Escape will upon completion discount your trailer up to the amount of the import tariff or 25% (whichever is less) such that you (the customer) don’t pay more than your signed-off build sheet commitment to import your trailer into the USA or, at its sole discretion Escape will refund your (otherwise) non-refundable 10% deposit.

Yes, they’re causing some challenges, but nothing we can’t manage so far by staying flexible. The biggest changes for our US customers are:

No More Giftboxes in US-Bound Trailers

We’ve paused including “Thank You Giftboxes” for trailers headed to the US. The administrative requirements to import them are simply too overwhelming, including:

1.A 20% tariff on all Made in China items (e.g., the box, pens, etc.)

2.Need for the customer’s SSN or the receiving company’s EIN

3.Requirement for an ACE Manifest

4.An import form for each item in the box

Parts Sales & Warranty Shipments

Made in China components now come with added complexity:

-Warranty Parts: Escape will cover the cost of the tariff.

-Parts Sales: Customers will be responsible for the tariff when importing.

Long-Term Pricing Pressure

Many of our components come from US-based suppliers who themselves source from China—either directly or via subcomponents. Because we’re a small manufacturer, we often rely on their bulk-buying. If tariffs remain in place, we anticipate increasing cost pressures, which may eventually require price adjustments.

The good news: once you’ve placed your 10% non-refundable deposit, we’re responsible for absorbing any increased costs that come up after that.

Shipping Delays

We are currently experiencing significant delays due to the new tariffs—at the Canada/US border, with customs brokers, and within our own shipping department. These are affecting both Parts Sales and Warranty shipments.

We’re doing everything we can to navigate this new landscape and get your orders to you as quickly as possible.

Thank you so much for your patience and continued support.

In the short term, no – this isn’t impacting Escape.

However, in the longer term, like the tariffs on Chinese products or parts into the USA the increased costs of aluminum and steel for our US suppliers we expect will be passed on to us.

At this time, yes, but it is unclear what will happen in the future and it is possible that we may have to ship it to you or pick up at a different location after we have imported it. We are certainly hopeful that customers will work with us to take delivery of their trailers very quickly after completion to ensure tariff on import risk is minimized on finished units.

Escape’s President Letter #3 - April 9, 2025

  1. It was on December 9th of last year when I first announced our ‘Tariff-Proof’ program – designed simply at that time to provide certainty to our American customers so they wouldn’t pay more than their confirmed build sheet price when they took delivery of their Escape as a result of paying a tariff of up to 25% on import into the USA.

Then, on February 9th, I clarified that all of our valued customers on both sides of the border were also protected from inflation in our costs as a result of tariffs (or anything else) once they have confirmed build sheets and non-refundable deposits placed with us.

However, on February 9th, I had also made this comment:

“At this time, it’s not clear how, or if Escape’s supply chain would be impacted by these two sets of retaliatory tariffs, but as we import a significant proportion of the components in our trailers from the US we expect it would likely be significant.”

Further, later in the letter I commented on the two rounds of tariffs (+10% each) on goods imported from China into the USA that had been implemented; as well as the announced 25% tariffs on aluminum and steel imports that were ultimately enacted shortly after it was written.

Sadly, foreshadowing that our input costs would be going up has already proven to be correct as you can see from these examples from just a few of our key suppliers:

You’ll note that I have kept the supplier identities confidential, the point here isn’t to call our partners out, but rather to give all of you as readers context for the situation we’re dealing with.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t give credit to our supply chain team that has been doing EVERYTHING in their power to allow us to hold prices where they are for as long as possible. For example, the below letter we sent to our suppliers requesting their support is one of the tools we used that I can share.

Although most of our suppliers have already pushed up prices – in many cases a lot; I feel that it’s important for all of you to know that a handful of our long-term suppliers have really stepped up as requested in this letter and supported us and in turn each and every one of our current and prospective customers which has allowed me to hold on sending this message out as long as I have.

In aggregate though, the simple fact is that the cost pressure we’re experiencing already is unbearable.

Unfortunately, on top of all of this existing cost pressure, on April 2nd the world watched as President Trump announced a minimum 10% tariff on all goods imported into the USA which came into effect on April 5th with far higher reciprocal tariffs on many countries to come into effect on April 10th, he also removed the de-minimus shipping exemptions from China. Additionally, the 25% tariff on imported automobiles also came into effect on April 3rd. Now, earlier today the reciprocal tariffs for all countries were reduced to 10% save China which was increased twice in the last two days and now the total tariffs amount to 145%.

Each of these decisions the President has made will take time to ripple through the global trade system – even without additional retaliation – though at least China and Canada have already retaliated at least in part and other countries may do so as well – as such, it is truly impossible to provide certainty for a long period of time on what our costs will be.

With all of that context – what does this mean for Escape and Customers?

First, I am proud to be able to share that for customers on both sides of the border who will take delivery prior to July 1, 2025 (non-E23’s) and prior to July 15, 2025 (E23’s) we are able to keep all of our promises; specifically, your trailer will be priced as we committed and will still qualify for the ‘tariff-proof’ guarantee on importation into the USA up to 25% protection if an import tariff comes into effect that requires it.

Second, customers with deliveries after July 1st (non-E23) and after July 15th (E23’s) fall into 3 groups:

1) Customers with a confirmed build sheet & full, non-refundable deposit paid on a custom trailer or a non-refundable deposit on an inventory unit

2) Customers with an initial refundable deposit paid on a custom build but an unconfirmed build sheet

3) Prospective customers who have yet to put any deposit down but have been considering an Escape based on ‘pre-supply-chain-impacting-tariff’ pricing they have seen on our website or are in preliminary discussions with our business development team members

Working backwards for these three groups:

3) Prospective customers who had not put down a deposit of any type prior to 11:59PM PDT on April 9, 2025 will be provided with an updated price that is 10% higher on the base & option prices; they can then choose whether to buy a trailer or not at the higher price. We will also update our website and builder tool with the new pricing as fast as possible.

2) Customers with an initial refundable deposit placed prior to 11:59PM PDT on April 9, 2025 that are still in configuration will have the option to either get their initial deposit refunded or take the opportunity to move ahead with their build with a price increase that is half of the increase a new customer would pay (equating to a 5% increase on base and options)

1) Customers with a confirmed build sheet & full, non refundable deposit paid with delivery after the July 1 or July 15th dates outlined above will have their confirmed build sheet price honoured.

It is unfortunate but necessary to take the above steps as our ability to plan into the future has become incredibly difficult; though directionally it seems that the only likely outcome is for prices on our inputs to keep increasing until either the trade war ends or the world finds a new normal level to stabilize at.

In either case, Escape remains absolutely committed to protecting our customers from uncertainty but we can only do so right now for short periods of time.

Therefore, I’ve authorized the configuration team to only confirm customers into delivery slots with these new prices and in doing so, provide the customers in those slots with complete certainty on what their trailer will cost – including extending the up to 25% tariff-proof on US import guarantee – up to August 29, 2025 (all models).

Once the remaining build slots in that window of time are completely filled we will open up another set of slots for configuration; hopefully without additional price increases & the ability to further extend the tariff-proof guarantee(on import into America) but that is unfortunately not something I can guarantee will happen at this time.

I sincerely wish I had better news to share – and trust me, there are a lot of exciting things happening at Escape we will share soon that have nothing to do with tariffs… but the marketing team gets to do the fun stuff apparently!

The last thing I want to address is the fact that we have received a fair bit of critical feedback recently from Canadian’s who are understandably reacting quite strongly.

I believe this feedback is mostly coming from how they’re feeling about the situation we find ourselves in as a country and not actually about Escape’s approach to this situation.

I need to remind everyone that we are just a small company full of people passionate about building incredible trailers just for you – nothing more or less.

Since we are entirely focused on serving ANY customer that comes our way – and yes, I admit that because the large majority of those customers have been American for quite a few years certain things like the currency we display most prominently on the website or the number of ‘u’s we have in color is arguably short by one (it’s ‘colour’ in Canada for any of our American friends who may not know) – that doesn’t make us any less proud of our country or less thankful for the life we all have living in or near Chilliwack, BC, Canada.

Everyone who knows anyone at Escape would never doubt that each day the team does their absolute best to deliver an exceptional customer experience and that’s not something we’ll ever be changing no matter where our customers call home.

We recently shared these ‘Facts for Canadians’ in response to some of the nastiest comments we received online, but I wanted to reiterate them here:

1) Escape has customers on both sides of the border, is incredibly grateful and thankful for each one and needs them all to succeed, in particular during challenging times.

2) We display prices in both currencies on our website. The configurator (builder tool), which was originally coded in USD, will soon be replaced with a new tool that shows both currencies and offers enhanced features for your convenience. Please be patient as we have been working very hard to launch this as soon as possible. We’re treating every customer equally, no matter where they’re from.

3) As part of our tariff response to support all customers, our prices are currently ‘fixed’ in terms of exchange rate for Canadians at 1.43 CAD:1.00 USD.

4) There’s no price ‘gouging’ and never was – Escape sells direct to customer to avoid dealer markups of up to 40% and in doing so saves customers money.

5) A choice to buy an Escape for a Canadian is a choice to support ~150 manufacturing jobs in Canada.

6) Even if your dealer shows the RV on their lot priced in Canadian dollars, drapes it in a Canadian flag, paints it red or does anything else to try to convince you it’s Canadian (like a sticker celebrating it having some Canadian lumber or aluminum in it); that unit almost certainly supports manufacturing jobs outside of Canada since over 90% of the RV’s sold in Canada are imported.

It’s important in closing to remind everyone that choosing to buy an Escape remains an incredibly sound decision for people on both sides of the border. Although the people who are reading this likely know already that we don’t believe in high pressure (or any pressure) sales tactics, it is entirely possible that these new prices will never be lower than they are now, as such waiting to buy is likely not in your best interest.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for trusting us with your business in uncertain times.

Escape’s President Letter #2 - Feb. 9th, 2025

On Feb 1st, the President of the United States signed an executive order that included a 25% tariff on all imported goods entering the US from Canada effective February 4th, which would – as we understand it at this time at least – include Escape Trailers.

He also signed orders for a similar 25% tariff on goods imported from Mexico, and a 10% tariff on goods imported from China.

Canada’s Prime Minister subsequently stated that Canada will be responding with retaliatory tariffs on up to $155 billion of goods imported into Canada from the US, with tariffs on the first $30 billion taking effect on February 4
th and the remainder coming into effect 21 days later on February 25th.

At this time, it’s not clear how, or if Escape’s supply chain would be impacted by these two sets of retaliatory tariffs; but as we import a significant proportion of the components in our trailers from the US we expect it would likely be significant.

In addition, there was language in the President’s executive order that would allow for further tariff escalation in the event of retaliatory tariffs being put in place by Canada (or Mexico or China), though the extent of the potential tariff rate increases for retaliating – if any – is unclear at this time.

Then on February 3
rd, just before the tariffs were set to take effect, Mexico and Canada both struck deals with the President to defer the tariffs on their respective goods by 30 days through committing to a variety of countermeasures to improve security at their respective borders with the US.

They also didn’t implement any of the retaliatory tariffs that had been contemplated.

However, the tariffs on Chinese imports did come into effect on Tuesday February 4
th. Since then, China has retaliated by placing tariffs on a number of US exports and also restricting sale of certain rare earth minerals to the US.

The impact of this Chinese retaliation, if any, on the current 10% rate levied by the US on their imports is not yet clear, but the press is reporting that potentially the two leaders will be meeting ‘soon’ to discuss the tariffs, and we expect more clarity after that.

More broadly, it’s also been widely reported that the President has stated that he’ll be enacting tariffs next on European countries and elsewhere around the world, targeting countries that have a trade surplus with the US.

As I’m writing this on Sunday the 9
th it was just reported that tomorrow (February 10th) a 25% import tariff will be placed on all steel and aluminum entering the US (including what’s sourced from Canada and/or Mexico). As Canada is a major supplier of aluminum to the US & in 2018 when tariffs were enacted on Canadian aluminum it seems possible this will result in some retaliatory action being taken by Canada.

Wow, talk about a complex, rapidly changing situation!

If I could make a request to each and every one of you representing both our incredible existing owners and prospective customers – on both sides of the border – it would be for patience; both with us here at Escape as we attempt to successfully navigate in this rapidly changing environment and in your interactions with each other.

The Escape Community is a unique one made up of amazing people living in both Canada and the US who undoubtedly have varied political leanings, but regardless of nationality or political preferences we’re thankful for you each of you being a part of what makes this community helpful, inclusive and wonderful.

It saddens me, as well as the entire Escape team to see any division occur between our two great countries – we are simply excited to build and sell exceptional trailers to customers all throughout North America and are hopeful for a permanent resolution that removes the risk of trade barriers as soon as possible.

To our US customers and prospective customers:

During this time of uncertainty and rapid change, I just wanted to reiterate our commitment to anyone who has or is considering placing what would be a normally ‘non-refundable’ deposit on a trailer.

As we stated in January, in the event tariffs are put in place we’ll either build your trailer and discount it sufficiently to offset a tariff import rate of up to a maximum of 25%, or we will refund your full deposit at our discretion.

Thank you once again for your trust and your business. We are deeply thankful for you.

To our Canadian customers and prospective customers:

Thank you once again for your trust and your business. We are also deeply thankful for you.

However, periodically, we hear complaints about a few things:

  • -the fact that we only show pricing in US Dollars on our website despite being based in Canada,
  • -the fact that we’ve provided the tariff-proof guarantee to US customers who committed to a trailer build but haven’t put the same in place for Canadians

On the first item, the truth of the matter is that although we are a proud Canadian manufacturer, we – like most Canadian manufacturers in many other industries – are deeply connected to the US, both in terms of customer count and supply chain inputs.

This means that the US Dollar absolutely drives our business and makes by far the most sense to display if we can only show one currency.

Unrelated to all this tariff noise, I am happy to share that for the last 6 months we’ve been working on a project to enhance our online trailer builder tool and that amongst many other enhancements we are going to introduce the ability to select which currency is displayed without creating a ton of administrative burden on our end to manage it.

Until that is ready to be released though later this month, we will be fixing the exchange rate for Canadian buyers at a flat 1.43 CAD : 1 USD. Pricing on the website will be updated to account for this change as quickly as possible, thanks for your patience.

With respect to the tariff-proof guarantee for US customers, believe it or not, Canadian customers who’ve put down their 10% non-refundable deposit already have it too… but it’s with respect to supply chain more than anything else at this time.

When you secure your build with a deposit Escape takes on all the risk of the costs of building your trailer changing – whether that’s currency changes or inflation in the cost of inputs or now retaliatory tariffs that if they come into effect will certainly increase costs for the trailers we build with parts from the US – and all of that risk sits with us.

You won’t pay more than your build sheet stated and all we’ve done with the tariff proof guarantee is give our US friends the same certainty.

What can I do to help Escape as a Canadian?

Our Escape Club members in Canada can help us significantly, both by sharing your wonderful trailer when we ask on behalf of a prospective customer, or better yet getting proactive and finding like-minded people in the market to buy one!

A Message From Escape's President - Dec 9th, 2024

Here at Escape, we went to bed with some uncertain feelings recently following President elect Trump’s announcement of planned January 20, 2025 executive orders for 25% tariffs on all products imported from Canada into the USA (alongside other planned tariff announcements impacting other USA trade partners).

Since then, many of our team members have been contacted by existing customers and prospective customers about the impacts of these planned tariffs either on their existing or new order, upcoming delivery and further upon Escape as a whole.

We are also aware that there are multiple discussions on the owner’s forum / facebook group discussing the planned tariffs and no doubt additional discussions are underway in many other areas.

In deciding what to communicate in response, we looked to our company values – and the best ones to apply in this instance are honesty & caring.

Starting with honesty – the simple truth is that we don’t know more than any of you about what happens from here.

There’s a massive amount of speculation in the press – on both sides of the political spectrum and/or border, but very few facts to work from.

What we do know for certain is that the President elect stated that he is concerned about illegal immigration and drugs coming into the USA from both its north and south borders and is planning to use broad tariffs on all imports from both Canada and Mexico unless those concerns are sufficiently addressed.

In addition, we know that there is an existing trade agreement between Canada, the USA and Mexico with rules that prevent certain unilateral tariff actions by any of the three countries who are a part of the agreement.

That said, how – if at all – the existence of this trade agreement impacts the additional planned tariffs is likely a matter for a lot of lawyers to decide, and not one that Escape as a small, Canadian manufacturer is likely to have a say in.

However, we are optimistic that solutions can and will be found before January 20th that will result in limited, if any impact on our business and its relationship with our customers and prospective customers North America wide.

We also believe that by signalling that he would place a tariff on the entire trade relationship between Canada and the USA two months before being empowered to do so; impacting a relationship which is estimated to be worth nearly $1 trillion / year in total, the President elect has guaranteed that everyone else – on both sides of the border – will be incredibly focused on ensuring that the steps are taken between now and then to ensure it never is required. We are encouraged to see that a lot of activity has happened since they were first announced, including the Prime Minister’s meeting with the President Elect and his team just before US Thanksgiving.

Moving to caring, even if tariffs or some other trade barriers were to come to pass, we believe that each of our customers and prospective customers know that we are not your average trailer manufacturer and are certainly not your average dealer. We’re your partner.

Escape’s team is made up of a group of incredible people who care deeply about our customers – as each of you know we’re in the business of building trailers for you to live out your dreams in. Therefore, we absolutely intend to continue to be your partner and do what we can to find a way for each of you to still receive your dream trailer and for Escape to be successful as well – no matter what happens. Thank you for your business and continued support & trust.
