Samuel's NW USA Epic Escape!
July 12th
Escape Departure
With lots of excitement we headed towards Bellingham, WA to get some groceries and fill up the fridge. We met Tommy, an Escape owner. He took the time to stop by and cheer us on which was a very encouraging encounter. After a late lunch we made our way to Stevens Pass, both the Sequoia (working hard) and F-150 puled nicely and we enjoyed the scenery along the way. The kids where “strategically” allocated to both vehicles and my brave request to switch the the youngest to my wife’s car was quickly denied…The walkie talkie’s we brought along proved to keep the family connected while we travelled and where lot’s of fun. When setting up camp, I met Tony, Kim and Ralf. They had never seen an Escape and enjoyed a tour. It’s fascinating how we sometimes forget that we are a tight community and many don’t know us. Exactly the reason we embark on My Epic Escape!
July 13th
Leavenworth
Waking up on the first day in the 21C, I realize how well the black out shades kept the light out. I slept in! Refreshed, we left Icicle River RV Park to check out Leavenworth, WA. I should mention that when we arrived yesterday the campsite host directed us with great expertise and made the parking experience very pleasant. That alone is worth a recommendation to stay there. Lots of trees and clean, too. He was keen to see an Escape from the inside and we gladly had him take a peek.
Leavenworth is an interesting town full of German architecture. We were blessed by a gentleman called Eric who saw us walk towards the main tourism avenue and gave us rides in his “Fahrt Cart”, an electric type of golf cart. Leavenworth also offers tubing on the Wenatchee River.
Heading out to Spokane, we stopped roughly one third of the way for a break. In 37 degrees Celsius, with the blazing sun above the family took shelter in the E23. We ran the Houghton AC, well done to whoever invented it! So far we absolutely love it. With the batteries fully charged and plenty of solar input the unit cools down quickly and would have kept going for a decent time. After arriving at the Pleasant Prairie Farms, Spokane and connecting with the Harvest Hosts Steve and Lori we set up “camp”. By the time of writing: Dinner is awaiting (using an instant pot for chicken curry) and we look forward to tomorrow. This is a neat place! Cows came to check us out and the kids have space to play. See you all tomorrow!
July 14th
Spokane
The day started early and we set up balloons, the Escape flag and banners. Strong wind gusts took the banners out and the balloons popped one after another. One of the boys was convinced of having seen a bird circle a balloon and heard a pop afterwards.
By 10:45 am several folks had arrived. During the day 16 guests showed up, some of which were owners, others interested to learn more about Escape and one couple, with an order in on the E23 Twin, took this opportunity to see an E23 for the first time. We had great conversations and went over many questions.
One guest named Andrew mentioned that the headliner keeps the noise out and that we could share this information more widely. During the previous night we ran a generator 6 meters away from the E23 and while audibly noticeable at the dinette, having the Houghton AC run it could not be heard in the bed area. That was a pleasant surprise!
We also made use of the outside shower on the 21C and the boys enjoyed getting the sand of that they carried home from a visit by the river.
Tomorrow, Monday August 15th we are heading to Baker City, “A Frame RV Park” While not an official stop, if you are in town and would like to say Hello toward the evening, we would love to meet. Estimated time of arrival around 6-7 PM.
July 15th
Baker City
Day 4! Travelling from Spokane, WA to Baker City, OR we encountered several “mini tornadoes” hovering over the farmland. I am sure the locals have a better word to describe them, but they were fun to watch and would break the at times monotonous drive through endless crops. There have been stretches with interesting rock formations and of course the mighty Columbia River hugging the road is spectacular. The water was warm and we all took a break getting our feet wet. Before taking to the road again, the outdoor shower came in handy to wash the black sand off our feet and sandals. I recall a conversation with “E23 to be owner” Andrew in Spokane and we pondered the thought of travelling with or without water. There are pros and cons, fuel efficiency is one consideration. For the stretch today we decided to travel without water in the 21C and with some water in the E23. That worked out to be the right decision. Despite the lack of public toilets along the journey, it has been a comfortable ride with our own rest rooms on board.
Arriving in Baker City, the A-Frame RV Park impressed us with personalized welcome signs and easy access from the highway. Hitting the pillow soon, tomorrow, Tuesday we will head over to Boise, ID and look forward to meeting you on Wednesday at the Franz Witte Garden Center.
July 16th
Boise
Day 5! The A-Frame RV park had washing machines and dryers (coin operated) so the first tasks of the day: Laundry! Before leaving the site, my wife prepared rice and minced meat, which we kept in a pressure cooker in order to enjoy a warm meal for lunch. It was a relatively short drive and we changed to Mountain Time, so plus 1 h compared to Pacific Time.
Driving through Oregon I was impressed by the dry vegetation, especially when considering how lush it is on the West side of the Cascade mountains. Once we crossed the Snake River, we made it to Idaho. After arriving at the Franz Witte Garden Center near Boise we were greeted by Scott who showed us the area for set up and parked our 21C and E23. Our first guest arrived, one day early. We enjoyed the conversation with him and Glade, our host shared his experience with the E19. For those who do not know Glade and Sherie: They have been the first couple suggesting we do a video tour with them back in 2020. Since then we took that idea on board and enjoyed hundreds of tours with our customers. Glade will bring their Escape 19 and tow vehicle Jeep Gladiator. See him in action here: https://escapetrailer.com/how-to-overland-in-an-rv-safely/
We are excited to see many participate on day 6 (Wednesday 17th) in Boise!
July 17th
Boise
Day 6! We welcomed over 20 participants at today’s open house at the Franz Witte Garden Center in Nampa, just outside of Boise, ID. I am ever so grateful to Glade for stepping up and assisting me in the many conversations. He took time out of his busy schedule to share his love for Escape and the experiences gained during the last four years. He tows his E19 with a Jeep Gladiator (https://escapetrailer.com/how-to-overland-in-an-rv-safely/) and loves the outdoors.
Having Glade’s E19 along with our 21C and E23 gave even greater perspective and we had multiple guests stay for a prolonged time. It was a real joy to see so many folks and explain the differences in layouts and options.
A big shout out to Linda and Melisa who both took calls during the day assisting with questions. For those who don’t know Linda, she is our Manager Trailer Customization and incredibly knowledgeable on all things configuring your trailer while Melisa is our Sales Manager, overseeing our talented sales representative team.
Staying the night in Gem State RV Park in Mountain Home.

Boise
Day 7! We woke up to a beautiful morning and with Gem State RV Park in Idaho being very accommodating. While my wife and oldest son ran some errands in town, they let us stay until the afternoon at no additional charge. The extra time allowed me to reach out to our next host Sego Lily Church in Salt Lake City and catch up with some work.
We broke camp around 3 PM and arrived at the City of Rocks RV park in Almo, Idaho toward the evening. It’s a small campsite and the host was very pleasant and helpful. We got dinner in the pot and took off for an evening exploration. Wow, what a sight that was. Amazing rocks and sunset! The 21C with the green colored bottom shell was in the perfect spot. The boys plaid hide and seek in the brush and we decided to do our daily video right there and then.
Today, I also had the pleasure to speak with Liz, who placed an order on a 21C the same day. Some of you have met her at the open house in Boise. She came with the E23 on her mind and stepped into it and as we had the 21C on display, too, she compared both. We had a great conversation on the differences between the units as she felt that the 21C may be the better fit for her. Thank you Liz and husband Andy for placing your trust in Escape to build you a beautiful Escape!
Tomorrow, Friday 19th we will be heading to Salt Lake city and get ready for the open house on Saturday, 20th. We hope to see many of you there!
July 19th
Sego Lily Church
Day 8! We left the City of Rocks and after encountering a traffic jam and experiencing driving on a six lane highway through Salt Lake City, we arrived at Sego Lily Church. We had a brief chat with Sarah from church and connected the E23 to a 110V power outlet. I must have pulled a cable connection earlier as the display was not showing power input and output. Dustin, our engineer, was amazing guiding me through the process and after putting the wire back in it’s allocated socket, we decided to put the fridge on propane gas to ensure the 110V outlet will have sufficient power to charge the batteries in order to run the AC throughout the night. So far it looks good and input is greater than power consumption.
Since it is a residential area we don’t want to run the generator. We are happy with the ZAP pack and it’s boondocking components. Although this is not entirely boondocking tonight, typically one would want a 30 AMP connector to charge the trailer. As for the E21C (which does not have a ZAP pack installed) we will run the MaxxFan and keep the large acrylic windows open.
The location is great, there are benches and a tent like structure providing shade. We will have our E23 and E21C parked side by side for easy comparison. Please remember to drive inside the church property and park at the back side where we are set up.
Tomorrow Saturday 20th is the big day and we look forward to welcoming you all in Salt Lake City!
July 20th
Salt Lake City
Day 9! Thank you to everyone who came to the Salt Lake City open house! We had 18 attendees, including current owners and potential new members. It was great to see owners sharing their experiences with newcomers. If you’re interested in seeing other models like the 17B, 19, or E5.0, let us know, and we’ll connect you with local club members.
Last night, we successfully ran the Houghton AC on a 110V outlet by switching the fridge to propane. Today, we tested the AC with our solar setup and fully charged lithium batteries. The AC ran for almost three hours, with solar input peaking above 500 watts. This shows the potential of cooling without shore power using a 3000-watt inverter.
We ended the day at a spray park, cooling off in Salt Lake City’s summer heat. Next, we’ll head to West Wendover on the 21st, with our next open house in Reno, Nevada, on the 23rd. See you there!
July 21st
Salt Lake City
Day 10! This morning we visited Salt Lake City Temple Square, listened in to a choir rehearsal while sitting in a 21,000 seats theatre. Impressive! We met a member of the church who gave us directions (he could have been Canadian as he apologized for the hot weather). We also hiked up to the State Capitol, but due to empty stomachs decided to watch from afar only.
After lunch in the E23 and grocery shopping to stock up on supplies we headed toward West Wendover, Nevada. On the way we stopped at the Salt Lake. Super hot environment and bright. In this location a driving speed record of over 600 miles per hour was broken.
Once we arrived at the campsite, the pool provided a fun refreshment and the laundry was due, too. It’s advisable to bring cash as lots of quarters are needed to wash and dry. We also encountered little spikes on the ground that go through flip flops and when removed, easily penetrate the skin on a finger. Tomorrow will be a travelling day with stop over in Winnemucca and on the 23rd we will be in Reno!
July 22nd
Winnemucca
Day 11! We planned to head out at 11 AM to make our way to Winnemucca, Nevada. Since the AC in the Sequoia quit, I first stopped at a local repair shop. Although we could not get that function going, it gave me a chance to admire a school bus (34 years old) which is being converted to a home on wheels and also had chat with a local rancher. Fun fact: Here in the desert, one cow requires around 60 acres of “grass land”. Once we took to the street I was amazed at the fact that for miles and miles the land had been fenced off. Hardly any livestock in sight but fences everywhere.
We encountered some heavy winds that could be felt on the trailers and we slowed down. Overall the ride was stable and we use the E2 by Fast way hitch but those gusts where tricky. We also saw what looked like a smoke cloud and we looked for flames. It was likely a small sandstorm, which would explain the heavy winds we encountered.
Toward the evening we enjoyed a thunderstorm and the cooling of the air. Tomorrow, Tuesday 23rd we will be in Reno! See you all soon.
July 23rd
Reno
Day 12! After an evening with Thunderstorm and big drops of rain, we woke up to another beautiful and sunny day. During the night we kept the windows in the 21C open, but at a steeper angle to provide less area for the heavy wind. That worked well and together with the MaxxFan it kept the unit ventilated. While in the E23 we kept the windows closed and the AC running. Both units have acrylic windows and the Houghton AC.
After leaving Silver State RV Park in Winnemucca we arrived in Reno, Nevada. We are back in the Pacific Time zone. Along the way we saw a prison and a sign “Prison area, do not pick up hitchhikers”…
Thank you all who joined the open house today and for allowing us to take some pictures to share! Topics today would range from comparisons between 21C and E23; tow vehicles for E5.0, acrylic windows, installation of the Anderson fifth wheel hitch (Trademasters in Chilliwack) to off grid camping and more. I met Randy and Jill who purchased a 21C four years ago and use it extensively. Always nice to see the support of owners, throughout this trip, to come and have a chat. Thank you all! Tomorrow we are heading toward California, it promises to be a nice drive.
On the 25th (12 PM to 7 PM) and 26th (1 PM to 6 PM) we will be in Sacramento and look forward to seeing you there! Bring your friends, questions and smiles.
July 24th
Sacramento
Day 13! We travelled through the beautiful mountains between Nevada and California and arrived in the Sacramento area. At the Julietta Winery in Clarksburg I talked with owner Greg and we planned ahead for the next day.
Our E23 and E21C are situated nicely next to grape wines and our friends Paul and Erika will bring their E5.0 as a special treat to step into. They will be here presumably between noon and 4 PM, so if you wish to see our awesome looking fifth wheel, be early. We also plan on some wine tasting here at the winery, there will be plenty of opportunity to chat and exchange ideas and experiences. Please park in front of the winery and make your way on a very short walk through the gate on foot to our units.
Today’s evening was fun, the boys played soccer and are ready to hit the pillow. We are grateful and excited to be able to stay for several nights in this most beautiful location and welcoming you all soon.
July 25th
Sacramento
Day 14! What a beautiful day in California! As a special treat Paul and Erika kindly took off work to be able to bring their E5.0. Paul’s expertise not only on the E5.0 but also on the tow vehicle (F150) was very helpful.
Hence today between noon and 4 PM we were able to show three different Escape models. During our conversations I would often refer to the online builder and brochures as to what base features are included in a unit and recommend to check out the resources we have online. Plus, Linda and Jodi (our configuration experts) with the help of engineering and production are very knowledgeable and glad to answer any questions around the build of your Escape.
The acrylic windows remain a great attraction and current owners asked if we can retrofit them. Unfortunately, currently we do not offer this aftermarket service due to it’s scope and complexity.
The location at the winery and service has been excellent. We enjoyed wine tasting and sitting together talking about our experiences with Harvest Host as well as the road toward joining the Escape family. Some owners attending today had bought their Escape before or during the RV buying rush of the last couple of years and we went down memory lane on date revisions for earlier completion dates when lead time was 1,5 years out. Today, an Escape can be completed and delivered within approximately 3 plus months of build sheet sign off.
Tomorrow, Friday the 26th, we will do one more open house in this lovely place, this time with the E23 and E21C and from 1PM-6PM, wine tasting included (non alcoholic beverages are available, too. I recommend the red slushy!).
Thank you all who joined today! See you at the Julietta Winery.
July 26th
Sacramento
Day 15! We enjoyed our second day in Sacramento. It was fun to chat with 15 – 20 participants and the host Julietta Winery looked after us with wine tasting and a beautiful setting.
Big shout out to all who joined, including Michael and Nora who visited us with their daughter. They had enjoyed a 21C and are expecting to take possession of their E23 very soon. We also had a visitor, Crystyn, who did a video walk through with me. She called the Escape the “unicorn” and had followed us for a while.
Gladly, our host Greg, agreed to be part of our daily video. He and Julietta have an interesting story: Instead of retiring after a successful working life, they decided to start a winery. She went to study winemaking and he and some buddies planted a vineyard, the average age among them was above 70 years of age. A true inspiration!
Tomorrow, Saturday 27th, we will head over to Fort Bragg Harbor RV Park. We are excited to see the ocean and we will keep you up to date on our journey.
Warm regards
Samuel
July 27th
Fort Bragg
Day 16! We said goodbye to the Julietta Winery and headed toward Fort Bragg. Along the way I spotted a delivery driver with two brand new Escape Trailers on it! That was exciting to see. Trista at Escape is amazing at juggling the deliveries and making sure both customers and drivers are well served.
We drove adjacent Clear Lake and passed through Lucerne which shares it’s name with a lake town in Switzerland. To our surprise, it was much colder at the coast than expected. That presented a great opportunity to try out the heat function of the Houghton AC. I was impressed! While I consider this function a nice to have and not necessary replacing the furnace, it did the job to warm us up on this chilly evening. We enjoyed a good meal made in the Escape trailers.
The Fort Bragg Harbour RV Park is providing us with water and power. Since there is no dump here and we just finished three nights without sewer connection we used the dump station at the Chevron Fuel Station in Fort Bragg (we paid 5 USD per trailer, cash only).
Yesterday, I noticed that when towing with the Sequioa the wheels on the 21C would lock up during breaking sooner than desired. My oldest son found the instructions of the break controller and today we reset it. The ride down the many switch backs toward the coast was smooth.
Tomorrow we plan to explore the town and beach.
July 28th
Fort Bragg
Day 17! Fort Bragg, a little beach town, has been our home for this weekend. It’s a place where folks like to stroll on top of the cliff walkways.
We spent the afternoon in Inglenook which is a short drive away and provides a beautiful beach. The boys enjoyed running away from the waves and chasing a ball (with a neighboring dog who skillfully joined the game). Signs remind us about areas that are safe or not safe in case of a Tsunami.
It has been windy and cooler compared to what we had experienced on our first half of the journey and looking at the Retro Renos T-Shirt I am wearing today, I think a shout out to these hard working folks is due. I am sure it’s warmer on your coast in Florida!
Later today, we ran some errands and enjoyed home made dinner with plenty of shrimps followed by ice cream. The dinette in the E21C will sit five of us comfortably, granted that is one adult and four kids and the sliding function of the table comes in handy to get seated. Speaking of the E21C, while there are many features I greatly enjoy about this unit, I find using the countertop adjacent to the bed super practical. It serves as a stand up desk and is just enough space for the laptop and a few other items. Although the kitchen area is large, the one in the E23 is a little bigger still and we usually do the dishes there. Plus the E23 we use has the Elkay Sink installed, in caviar. I find this color more forgiving than the parchment (off white) in case of any marks caused when cleaning heavy pots and pans.
After an amazingly red sunset, the evening sets in. Tomorrow, Monday, 29th we will be heading up to the Redwood Forest. We are excited to see some big trees!
July 29th
Redwood National Park
Day 18! Today we drove along the cost and through redwood forests to Crescent City, California. The road was windy and narrow and the E21C and E23 followed along nicely. During a stop, we met David and his wife. He asked for a business card as he was intrigued by our fiberglass trailers. We gave him a short tour and went on our way. Perhaps one day he will join the growing Escape family, too!
Backing up the E23 on the campsite was a bit of an adventure. We arrived after sunset and had to back up around a corner next to a large redwood tree. When another vehicle showed up and we blocked the road, it meant: Pulling out and doing a loop to get back to start. We did that twice and with much patience and guidance from our second eldest son, I made it! Success! Both trailers are set up and we enjoy the luxury of full service sites, on site showers and laundry at the Village Camper Inn RV Park. Tomorrow 31st we are planning to explore the woods.
July 30th
Redwood National park
Day 19! Being in the Redwood Forest, we enjoyed a day at the Trees of Mystery in Klamath, California. We found it a well rounded experience with the excitement of being in a gondola, the thrill of walking on lofty bridges between huge trees and a good portion of exercise and learning. The tallest tree here is almost 300 feet!
In the late afternoon we spent some time at the beach and spotted seals on rocks about a kilometer or so out in the ocean. The binoculars came in handy and we could make out a large male posing on the rock. With lots of fresh air and running around, the boys have had their share of adventure.
We enjoy the campsites amenities with showers and laundry and look forward to another interesting day tomorrow. Perhaps we may spot a whale or two?
July 31st
Redwood National Park
Day 20! Another amazing day at the beach came to an end. We did not see whales. However, we saw lots of little animals including crabs and snails. We heard the sealions in the distance and watched the waves. It’s been a relaxing day strolling along the beach. Having been here for two days, we get to know the roads and feel a little bit like locals. It’s nice to get back to the campsite and have access to all the amenities away from home.
In the evening, we used the oven in the E23 and made fish fingers, nice and crispy! By now, the tow vehicles are both attached to the trailers and we are ready to head out tomorrow for the journey to Florence, Oregon.
We look forward to the next open house on Friday, August 2nd in Eugene (Lebanon)!
August 1st
Florence
Day 21! We made our way to Florence, Oregon and found a spot at the beach about an hours drive into the journey. A great place for lunch. As usual, when there is water and sand, the youngest ones have the time of their lives. We continue our journey through pine forests and enjoy the foggy scenery. Near Florence we see sand dunes, some of them reach all the way to the road.
We are staying at the Port of Siuslaw Campground and if we make it up early enough tomorrow, Friday August 2nd, we will climb a sand dune or two before heading over to the Berkey’s Blueberries Farmers Market in Lebanon (north of Eugene). I look forward to meeting you there between 3 PM and 6 PM!
August 2nd
Harvest Host Berkey’s Blueberries Farmers Market
Day 22! We made it to the Harvest Host Berkey’s Blueberries Farmers Market (Lebanon) and met with Jesse, the owner from whom we purchased some jam for today’s participants to enjoy. Jesse provided an amazing spot at the river where we set up camp.
Close to a dozen folks show up early on during the open house with a few more after. Among the attendees where owners of a small pull behind as well as owners of a highly customized 40+ feet diesel puller. The interest for an Escape Trailer can be two directional: For some it is looking for more space, for others it is a desire to downsize. And then we had a couple who owns another fiberglass trailer brand and is considering an Escape for the future. We also welcomed Escape owners and I am so grateful for all the feedback and support received!
Tonight we are staying at the KOA Albany, Corvallis (33775 Oakville Road South Albany). It is a well organised campground and the layout and variety of units invites for a stroll. Walking around the campsite the boys and I notice a variety of tents, cabins, tent trailers, tow behinds, small and larger motorhomes including a large high end class A and of course our two beautiful Escape Trailers! I am curious and decided to jump on the websites of a particular class A manufacturer and noticed a warranty disclaimer: “5 years or 50,000 miles delamination limited warranty”. While this sounds impressive, with an Escape, there is no delamination to begin with. It’s a solid one piece fiberglass shell. The best way to go!
Tomorrow, August 3rd we will be heading toward Portland. Our next open house is happening on Sunday August 4th at Columbia Gorge Vintners, a family winery in Washougal, WA. Hope to see you there!
August 3rd
Columbia River
Day 23! We crossed the Columbia River, the dividing line between Oregon and Washington and set up camp at the Columbia Gorge Vintners in Washougal. It is so close to the river that we drove downhill and took the opportunity for an evening excursion at the beach. We first crossed the Columbia on our way to Spokane, but this time we spent a little more time getting our feet wet.
The property we are staying at has character. 150 acres, horses, cows and sheep and at night a large dog running around in the apple tree orchard (behind the fence) barking at the occasional coyote and larger predators. The owners have placed us in a pretty spot adjacent to a picnic table and the nearby barn allows for a sit down in the shade. We are planning on wine tasting for everyone interested.
Happy Sunday everyone and I look forward to meeting all who will be joining us on August 4th between 12 PM and 7 PM.
August 4th
Portland
Day 24! We had an amazing day and welcomed around 50 guests! Huge Thank you! To Randy and Joanne for bringing your E5.0 and expertise. Hanging out with you has been amazing.
Also big Thank you! to Ray and Cheryl, our hard-working hosts. You have built up a nice place and we thoroughly enjoyed staying here.
We are heading to Tacoma near Seattle and look forward to meeting you at the last open house on Tuesday 6th. A bittersweet thought as our journey is coming to an end soon. See you there!
August 5th
Puyallup
Day 25!
Yesterday evening ended with a star-filled sky and a good chat with E5.0 owner Randy. It has been a joy having him and Joanne stay not only for the day but also camp overnight and lending a helping hand. I often say “We made memories!” and this has been true for the My Epic Escape trip. After saying our goodbyes we travelled to the Majestic RV Park in Puyallup. Driving in the Seattle area around the afternoon rush is not for the faint-hearted… we made it through. The sun has been out and we enjoyed the evening and settling in at the campground.
Tomorrow we will be heading over to Tacoma to our last open house. We hope to meet many there and talk about the trailers, our amazing ambassadors, the joy at rallies and the freedom of traveling throughout North America in an Escape. We will meet at Reed’s Sweet Wine between 10 am and 6 pm.
See you there!
August 6th
Seattle – Reeds Sweet Wine
Day 26!
Today is a day of gratitude!
Thank you to all who joined the open house at the Reed’s Sweet Wine harvest host location. With this last open house our journey is coming to an end.
I would like to express my appreciation to everyone involved in making it a success, both in Chilliwack and across the six states we visited. Whether you are a customer or perhaps a customer to be, seeing well over 200 folks join the open houses has been a joy. Every one of you are special and your commitment is amazing. We made memories and I wish you well on your journeys. Perhaps we meet another day, at a rally or elsewhere on the open road. Thank you for your tremendous support!
We are heading home to Chilliwack, BC. Our family made lot’s of memories and I am proud of each of them helping. Whether it was putting little foot and handprints on the trailer walls or cleaning them off prior to every open house, we had a blast!
Escape Trailer is built for you!
Warm regards
Samuel
